What effects are caused by crystal meth?

Attorney Kevin Hayslett: First of all, how long does it stay in someone’s system once they’ve ingested it, and second, how do we detect it in someone’s system?

Toxicologist Ron Bell: When you refer to “in someone’s system,” what that means to me as a toxicologist is that it is in the body itself, in the circulating blood. This is a particularly long acting drug, or fairly long acting drug, and can be detectible in a blood

sample for up to several hours after last use and the effects can last for several hours after last use.

Kevin Hayslett: So, if someone were to ingest crystal meth, it would actually effect that person’s motor skills, they may be under the influence or impaired by them for several hours after ingesting?

Ron Bell: Yes, they would be influenced and be affected by that stimulant for a number of hours. Now interestingly enough, central nervous system stimulants actually don’t have an effect on motor performance skills, but they do have other types of impairing effects.

Kevin Hayslett: If someone were to ingest crystal meth and law enforcement does a urine screen to detect presence of controlled substances, how will that correlate with regards to impairment by crystal meth versus the presence of crystal meth in a urine screen?

Ron Bell: In a urine sample, the presence of the methamphetamine only indicates prior use of that substance; it does not necessarily suggest that the individual is under the influence at the time of the driving incident, it doesn’t exclude that possibility either. Because methamphetamine can be detected in a urine sample for a few days after last use, urine samples only provide information about previous use at some point in time prior to the time the urine sample was collected.
