Can Urine Testing Determine Blood Alcohol Levels?
Hi I’m attorney, Kevin Hayslett, and I’m here with Forensic Toxicologist, Ron Bell. Ron, when law enforcement is doing a DUI investigation and they obtain a urine sample, can that urine sample be tested to determine what a person’s blood alcohol level is?
RB: The answer to that Kevin, is no. Alcohol concentration can be measured in a urine sample; but the amount or the concentration of alcohol in urine never correlates or matches the amount of alcohol in a person’s system or the concentration of the alcohol in a person’s blood. Generally speaking, urine concentrations well exceed that of the blood alcohol concentrations the individual might poses at the time of the urine sample collection.
