ETHICS 1

LIMITATIONS OF AUTHORITY


THE FIRST DUTY OF A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER, AS ENFORCER OF THE LAW, IS TO KNOW ITS LIMITS. THE OFFICER REPRESENTS THE LEGAL WILL OF THE COMMUNITY, AND MUST BE COGNIZANT OF THE LIMITATIONS SOCIETY PLACES UPON LAW ENFORCEMENT THROUGH ITS LAWS. THE OFFICER MUST BELIEVE IN THE AMERICAN SYSTEM OF JUSTICE, WHICH GIVES NO MAN, GROUP OF MEN, OR INSTITUTION, ABSOLUTE POWER, AND MUST BE COMMITTED TO DEFEND THAT SYSTEM, AND DO NOTHING TO PERVERT ITS CHARACTER.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY OF JOB 

THE PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY OF THE POLICE SERVICE, AND OF THE INDIVIDUAL OFFICER, IS THE PROTECTION OF THE PEOPLE THROUGH THE ENFORCEMENT OF THEIR LAWS.  CHIEF AMONG THESE IS THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES AND ITS AMENDMENTS.  THE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER ALWAYS REPRESENTS THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY AND ITS LEGALLY EXPRESSED WILL AND IS NEVER THE ARM OF ANY POLITICAL PARTY OR CLIQUE.

 

 

 

ETHICS 3

ATTITUDE TOWARD PROFESSION

THE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER RECOGNIZES THAT A POSITION IN LAW ENFORCEMENT IS HELD AS A PUBLIC TRUST. AND THE INDIVIDUAL OFFICER IS A PUBLIC SERVANT.  BY DILIGENT STUDY AND SELF-IMPROVEMENT, THE OFFICER SHALL APPLY EVERY SKILL AND SCIENCE TO THE SOLUTION OF CRIME.   IN THE FIELD OF HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS, THE OFFICER SHALL STRIVE FOR EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP AND PUBLIC INFLUENCE IN MATTERS AFFECTING PUBLIC SAFETY.  POLICE WORK IS AN HONORABLE PROFESSION RENDERING VALUABLE SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY AND COUNTRY.

 

 

ETHICS 4

PRIVATE CONDUCT 

THE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER SHALL BE AWARE OF THE SPECIAL IDENTIFICATION THE PUBLIC THE PUBLIC PLACES UPON AN OFFICER OF THE LAW.  POOR CONDUCT IN PRIVATE LIFE, EXPRESSING EITHER DISRESPECT FOR THE LAW OR SEEKING TO GAIN SPECIAL PRIVILEGE, DISGRACES THE POLICE OFFICER AND THE POLICE SERVICE.  THE COMMUNITY AND THE SERVICE REQUIRE THAT THE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER LEAD THE LIFE OF A DECENT AND HONORABLE PERSON.  FOLLOWING THE CAREER OF A POLICEMAN GIVES NO PERSON SPECIAL PRIVILEGE.  THE OFFICER’S  PRIVATE LIFE SHOULD BE SUCH THAT IT IS REGARDED AS AN EXAMPLE OF STABILITY, FIDELITY AND MORALITY.
