What is Forensic Toxicology?
Hi I’m attorney, Kevin Hayslett, and I’m here with Forensic Toxicologist, Ron Bell.
Ron: Toxicology is the science that focuses on the adverse effects of drugs, alcohol, and poisons on human beings. The science of toxicology focuses on the effects that substances may have on a person’s behavior or performance and it also includes the role that substances may play in a cause of death.
Kevin: What are the types of the things that you would do for Pinellas County as far as analyzing body fluids, blood, ect.
Ron: I’ve served as the Director of the Toxicology Laboratory for the Medical Examiner’s Office, here locally, in Pinellas County, for 25 years. In that role, the laboratory was involved in toxicology testing on body fluids and tissues, both in medical examiner cases, which were investigations of unnatural deaths, as well as testing for drugs and/ or alcohol in blood or urine specimens, for local police agencies and DUI cases.
Kevin: So as far as your experience, you’ve been provided samples of, say, blood from an alcohol related accident and you’ve been asked to analyze that blood to determine the alcohol content. Is that correct?
Ron: That is correct. That was one of the roles that we play.
